Gaya is an ancient place and has great heritage and history. The city is located on the bank of Falgu River and is considered among one of the most sacred cities for Hindus. People from all over the world visit Gaya in order to offer homage to their ancestors (Shradh or Pind Daan Puja). Legend says that even Lord Ram had come to Gaya to pay homage to his ancestors and Sita had accompanied him on his way.
The Phalgu river flows on the eastern side of Gaya, the river was cursed by Mata Sita to flow as underwater river. The Mangla Gauri Shrine has been mentioned in Purana and scriptures. It is among the 18 Maha Shakti Peetha. The Vishnupad dedicated to Lord Vishnu was constructed by Queen Ahilbai during 18th Century. The Akshayvat is the tree blessed by Mata Sita to remain immortal, hence the tree never shreds its leaves in any season. The Sita Kund is the place where Maa Sita performed the ritual of Pind Daan for her King Dashartha, her father-in-law.
