Vaishali is considered to be the first republic in the world. Vaishali is one of the significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites because it was here that Gautam Buddha gave his final sermon and announced his Nirvana. The Second Buddhist Council was organized in Vaishali. The town gets its name after King Vishal of Mahabharata era who built a great fort here, which has now turned into ruins.
King Ashoka constructed Ashoka Pillar in Vaishali in honor of the last sermon of Lord Buddha. The Vaishali Museum is a treasure of archaeological leftovers, displaying artifacts from the ancient times. The ASI protected Buddha Relic Stupa contains one of the eight parts of the mortal remains of Gautam Buddha after he attained Nirvana. Abhishek Pushkarn (or Coronation Pond) is a sacred water body adjacent to the Relic Stupa that contains the ashes of Lord Buddha. Raja Vishal Ka Garh is known to be the ancient parliament house.
