Kushinagar is situated in the north east region of Uttar Pradesh near Gorakhpur. It is one of the four most prominent Buddhist pilgrimage sites as it was here that Lord Buddha took his last breath and attained Mahaparinirvana. Hence it is popularly known as the last resting place of Lord Buddha. The town is well known for its temples, stupas and history.
The Mahaparinirvana Temple was built by Emperor Ashoka at the exact spot where Lord Buddha attained salvation (Mahaparinirvana). The temple houses a reclining statue of Lord Buddha depicting the state of death. The Ramabhar Stupa marks the spot where Lord Buddha was cremated. The Kushinagar Museum is home to several antiques and relics such as sculptures, seals, coins, and statues. One of the main attractions of the museum is the eye-catching Gandhara stye Stucco statue of Lord Buddha. Followers from various countries have built temples in Kushinagar such as: Indo Japan Srilanka Temple, Chinese Temple, Thai Temple, etc. The Matha Kunwar Shrine is home to a Buddha statue constructed out of a single stone.
