Kapilavastu

Kapilavastu was the capital of Shakya clan under the reign of King Shuddhodhan – Buddha’s father. It is the place where Siddhartha Gautama (The Buddha) spent his childhood, first 29 years of his life to be precise before leaving the royalty to attain enlightenment. The town is named after Sage Kapila- the founder of Samkhya School of Philosophy.

The Tilaurakot complex is the main attraction of Kapilavastu. The Tilaurakot Fort is the ancient home of Siddhartha Gautam where he grew up and lived with his family until he renounced materialistic life. It is situated on the banks of the Banganga river. The Tilaurakot Museum is small and quaint treasure of artificats housing jewellery, coins, seals, pottery and toys. The main archaeological site houses many stupas built by Gupta kings including emperor. Ruins of palace were found from where Shuddhodhan ruled over the region.

The Kapilavastu Buddha Mohastav is organized each year for 3 days from 29 to 31 December.
